Harmful Levels Of BPA Found In Food

B180px-bisphenol_aPA, or Bisphenol A, is a plastic hardener and of great concern to many consumer protection groups.  In fact, many retailers here in San Francisco offer BPA free products and containers.  Well, today those groups got a little more backing.  According to the LA Times, measurable levels of BPA were found across a wide range of canned foods including some that had been labeled BPA Free.

If children were to eat several servings of food with BPA levels identical to the levels of the tested foods, they would achieve levels of BPA in the blood that have caused adverse effects in animal studies.

Many retailers have began removing items with BPA from their shelves and several manufactures of baby bottles have agreed to stop selling bottles that contain the compound.

Many groups including the Consumers Union, a nonprofit organization that publishes Consumer Reports are pushing for the banning of BPA from materials used in food preparation or service.
