Federal Advisory Panel Votes to Ban Percocet and Vicodin

800px-flattenedroundpillsAccording to the New York Times (click here), an advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration voted on Tuesday to recommend a ban on both Percocet and Vicodin.  The two drugs work by combining a narcotic with acetaminophen, the active ingredient in many over the counter pain medications like Tylenol.  But, as reported by the Times, high doses of acetaminophen can cause liver damage.  And according to the Times, more than 400 people die and 42,000 are hospitalized every year in the United States from overdoses.

As the Times points out, the F.D.A. is not required to follow the advice of its advisory panel, but normally does.
